googled!!!

Was just wondering... when we had C programming as a subject in our college, we tried making different programs. One of them was a program to search a particular word in a sentence. And God! It was tough. Plus it was slow. Now try searching for something on google. The probable time for listing a million sites is about 0.2 seconds! And staring agape into the eyes of the million lightyears difference between our and google's algorithm, I coudnt help wonder whether what we learn or use in college is pre-historic. Think about it. To scan millions of websites in the time taken by sound to reach 3 times the length of a cricket pitch, calls for a genius algorithm, besides high processing speed. Hats of to the google geniuses!!
Cheers!!!

But dude if everytime we have to start from scratch, when will we ever reach the phase that is undergoing development right now??? Do you still study how the water-wheels were designed, in this age of maglev and supersonics???? Isnt there a time when you drop obsolete stuff and just move on?

hello mech engg., u r actually not supposed to make such programmes as to what we have for sites like google.that is the job of a computer enjgg.this is just the begining as rightly said by akshay, but if u r interested then can go for advanced stuff.but yes u have start fromn the scratch.why were we taught a simple slider crank mechanism? and not ic engine directly.think..and u r talking about c,its the basic language.

Well, its true we were first taught crank mechanism, then IC engine. But the point is, we WERE then taught IC engine. What we have learnt in C is not at all usefull in our careers, unleass and untill we have indepth knowledge of the language in detail. What worth is it then to spend one semester learning stuff which you arent ever going to learn? And if ever anyone goes where software is being made or something, he is bound to be taught all languages from scratch during training!! What we have learnt wont be of any use to him!!
